BGS Open Day 2022
Join us for a FREE day of science and discovery as we explore the fascinating world beneath our feet!
Event on 25/06/2022Thank you to everyone who has expressed an interest in our Open Day in June. We have been overwhelmed by the positive response and the event has now sold out.
—————————–
The BGS Open Day is back in Keyworth for the first time in three years!
Come along and find out how geology affects us. From volcanoes and earthquakes to soils and underground aquifers, geology can be found everywhere, even in your kitchen cupboards and your mobile phone.
Activities for children and families
We’ll have a range of hands-on, geoscience-based activities for children and families to enjoy, including gold panning, soil sifting and the enthralling toilet roll of time! Discover some of the incredible rocks and fossils we have on display and meet our amazing scientists who are helping us to protect our natural environment, homes and cities from the effects of rising temperatures and climate change.
Behind-the-scenes tours
There will also be a rare chance to join a special behind-the-scenes tour of our Core Store, where scientists learn about the rocks that shape our natural world and where layers of rock core are stored as high as the ceiling. Bookings for these tours will be available on the day and spaces will be limited. Please see the talk schedule and tour overview for further information.
Outdoor activities will take place in and around our unique geological walkway, alongside marquees and inside activities – we’re prepared for all weathers!
Food and refreshments
We will have refreshments available in our onsite canteen, plus lots of outdoor space, if you wish to bring along your own picnic.
