Alice Bird is the business development manager for the Multi-hazards and Resilience (MHR) challenge area of BGS, which includes the volcanology, geomagnetism, seismology and shallow earth geohazards and Earth observations teams. Alice holds both a bachelors and a masters degree from the University of Exeter in geoscience subjects, but has worked in business and business development for five years. Able to understand the geological research being done by the scientists that work in MHR makes Alice able to support the business and funding side of the team with understanding for the science and the academics who want to pursue it.

Alice works with internal scientists and external organisations who work with BGS to find opportunities for commercial funding by supporting funding bids and helping navigate business conversations with stakeholders. Writing business plans, financial reports, bid updates, running workshops and more are also part of the job of the business development managers, bridging the gap between the science and the operational management of the organisation.
