Grant graduated with an honours degree in geology from the University of Edinburgh in 1988.

Since 2020, Grant has managed business development for the environmental change, adaptation and resilience (ECAR) science challenge area. In this role he looks after a portfolio covering offshore marine maps and mapping, environmental modelling, groundwater and soil geology, as well as the organic, inorganic and stable isotope laboratories. He provides account management, business intelligence and planning, ongoing contract maintenance support and tender submission oversight.

Initially Grant worked as a geologist for Robertson Research at their core laboratory in Aberdeen. Then, in 1990, he joined Sperry-Sun as an offshore field engineer, where he held a variety of roles in operations, business development and country management. Leaving in 2005, he joined Weatherford and held senior positions in operations, business development and contract management teams prior to joining BGS in 2020.
