BGS has undertaken resource assessments of shale gas in the UK for the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), has extensive databases relating to UK shales, and has GIS and modelling capability to handle and display the data.

Our capability includes:

• databases of conventional oil and gas well data to identify potential targets, for example maturity indices, total organic carbon and shale formation crops and thicknesses
• seismic and well databases incorporated into a geographical information system (GIS) as well as non-petroleum records (from example from Geological Survey records)
• digitising/scanning existing subsurface maps, surface maps
• 3D modelling
