Most of my research has focused on the interactions of soil and water. This has involved examining the lability, solubility and bioavailability of heavy metals in soils and soil pore waters, and the land to sea transfer of nutrients such as Carbon, Silicon, Nitrogen and Phosphorus. Recent research has focused on soil moisture and shallow water table interactions and how they may impact crop yield and this work has been undertaken in the UK and southern Africa where I have also worked on conservation agriculture practices and the remediation of damaged soils. I have worked on soil erosion and formation rates and how these influence soil lifespans. In addition, I’m developing core scanning techniques to examine how soil and sub-soil structure impacts nutrient cycling. I have undertaken work for NERC, DEFRA, the EA, Welsh Government and industry.
