We have extensive experience in developing data access applications and have been making spatial data publicly available via the web for nearly 20 years. Here are some highlights of applications we have worked on.

Our first application, released in July 2000, was GeoIndex, a map-based index to our data holdings.

This was closely followed by commercial services such as GeoReports, which provides automated, site specific, geological-assessment reports created from a number of underlying spatial datasets.

In December 2009, we released OpenGeoscience, an open-access portal to BGS data. This included a web-based interactive viewer and WMS service for its 1:50 000-scale digital geology data for the whole of Great Britain — the first time in the world that national coverage, attributed, street-level scale geology data has been made available via the internet. OpenGeoscience received 20 million hits on its day of release and was awarded Esri UK Innovation in Central Government (Highly Commended) in 2010.

We have since used the OpenGeoscience web services (delivered using ArcGIS Server) to deliver the data via the iGeology smartphone app for both iPhone and Android phones. iGeology has had over 250 000 downloads and was awarded Esri UK Innovation in Central Government (Highly Commended) and AGI Innovation & Best Practice (Highly Commended) in 2011. Our iGeology 3D app extends functionality to include augmented reality.

We followed the success of iGeology by collaborating with the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology to release mySoil, a similar map app providing soil property data for the UK. This was followed by the UK Soil Observatory, a web portal bringing together soil-property information from nine research partners, which was awarded AGI Award for Geospatial Excellence with Impact in 2014.

Groundhog delivers 3D geological model products including synthetic borehole reports, cross- and horizontal-section reports and access to 3D geological model data.
