Geological Survey of England and Wales, Vertical sections

Vertical sections were drawn to illustrate the succession of strata in the coalfields. They were usually drawn on a vertical scale of 40 feet to one inch. Each sheet generally contains more than one section. Information on which they are based is from measurements from the Survey geologist or more commonly by the managers of the collieries. The intention was to enable the showing of more detail than can be shown in horizontal sections. A small number of sections are in non-coalfield areas to show particularly important sections e.g. Jurassic rocks in Eastern Yorkshire. Circa 95 Vertical sections were issued for England and Wales between 1850 and 1949.
