Geological Survey of England and Wales, Horizontal sections

Sections were the first attempt by the Survey to indicate 'the arrangement of rocks beneath the surface'. Undertaken on the scale of six inches to the mile they were coloured in accordance with the one-inch geological maps. The lines were very carefully surveyed and complete notes of the geology traversed were made. They were issued with a short explanatory pamphlet. The Horizontal Sections were engraved on copper and published on sheets and may include up to six lines or 36 miles of sections. About 148 sections were published between 1844 and 1894.
