Lithological Description: Sandstone, yellow with red and green mottling, with carbonate-cemented (cornstone) concretions.
Definition of Lower Boundary: The lower boundary conformably overlies the red-brown silty mudstone, with carbonate-cemented concretions, of the Foul Port Mudstone Member, Kinnesswood Formation.
Definition of Upper Boundary: The upper boundary is conformably overlain by a grey mudstone sequence with ferroan dolostone beds of the Ballagan Formation.
Thickness: Approximately 16 m.
Geographical Limits: The West Bay Cornstone Member is known only on the island of Great Cumbrae, where it is exposed on the south coast of the island adjacent to West Bay Road, Millport. The member is mapped at outcrop to underlie the town of Millport. The outcrop is limited to the east by the Kaimes Bay Fault where the member is part of the hanging-wall sequence.

Type Section  The type section is coastal exposures on the southern side of Great Cumbrae Island, Strathclyde region. The entire member, including the lower and upper boundaries, is exposed on the coast at the south-west end of the town of Millport [NS 157 543 to 156 542] (see Monro, 1999).
