Quarter-inch geological map of England and Wales [Old Series]

A proposal was made under Archibald Geikie to issue a series of maps showing the geology of England and Wales at the scale of four miles to one inch. It was thought these maps would be useful to teachers and tourists and indeed it proved very popular. The first sheet was published in 1889 and the series was completed in 1895 with the last sheet being issued in 1906. Sheets were engraved on copper and hand-coloured. The series was issued on 15 sheets though sheet 1 was the series title sheet and sheet 3 the 'Index to colours'.

Maps in this series are out of print. Copies can be purchased 'print on demand'. To purchase follow the link on a maps Full record page.
