Second Edition based on limited six-inch surveys published in 1938, reprinted in 1947, reprinted at 1:50 000 scale in 1978. Original geological survey on the six-inch scale (County Series): Chalk and Tertiary outcrops by C. Reid in 1890 (southern area up to Northing 15), W. Whitaker in 1873-75, 1884 and 1890 (area covered by TO 21 SW), Lower Greensand outcrops by J.F. Kirkaldy in 1933-36 and A.J. Bull and F.H. Edmunds in 1933-36 (area covered by TO 21 SW, 11 SW and 11 SE). Area north of Northing 20 (County Series and National Grid Sheets) surveyed by R.G. Thurrell, R.W. Gallois, R.D. Lake, B. Young, C.R.
