NGDC is the designated NERC data centre for the storage and management of geoscience data in the UK. Our team of specialist data management staff provide support to all those depositing to and re-using data from NGDC.
We have a number of guidance pages that address the various user groups we serve. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the NGDC (ngdc@bgs.ac.uk).
For our governing policies, please visit the about NGDC page.
NERC grant-funded researchers
As part of the NERC Environmental Data Service (EDS), NGDC is the place of deposit for NERC-funded datasets that fall under the discipline of geoscience, in compliance with NERC’s data policy, to which all NERC grant holders are subject.
Further guidance and FAQs can be found on our NERC grant-funded researchers page. Please visit data management plans (DMPs) or generating digital object identifiers (DOIs) for more guidance on your deposited datasets.
UK drilling companies and contractors
Under UK legislation, BGS (and NGDC as an extension) is designated as the place to which notification of borehole drilling must be given and the resulting records must be deposited. Full guidance on complying with these statutory requirements can be found on our drilling legislation and obligations page, as well as more general borehole drilling best practice.
National Geological Repository users
All those wishing to access or deposit material to the National Geological Repository (NGR), the UKRI science facility that houses our physical core, samples and specimen collections, can find further information on the NGR pages.
BGS Library and archives
