It includes superficial and bedrock units, plus synonyms and other names that are not currently recognised by the BGS or regarded as obsolete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can search on full or partial names of geological units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Full entry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A full lexicon entry includes: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>geological unit name<\/li><li>a persistent unique identifier (the lexicon \u2018computer code\u2019)<\/li><li>preferred map code<\/li><li>current status of the name<\/li><li>rank<\/li><li>parent unit<\/li><li>geological age<\/li><li>lithology<\/li><li>definitions of boundaries<\/li><li>thickness<\/li><li>previous and alternative names<\/li><li>geographical extent<\/li><li>type localities<\/li><li>reference list<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Limitations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The lexicon is a dynamic database where new entries are added and existing entries are revised, upgraded and reclassified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The information held is a current BGS interpretation. They are generally superficial and unnamed, for example unnamed raised beach deposits, glacial moraines or river terrace deposits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lithodemic units<\/strong>: geological units that do not obey the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Law_of_superposition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">law of superposition<\/a>, for example igneous intrusions and ancient, highly deformed and metamorphosed terranes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lithostratigraphic units<\/strong>: geological units that obey the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Law_of_superposition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">law of superposition<\/a>,&nbsp;i.e.&nbsp;they were deposited in layers with the oldest at the base and the youngest at the top, for example sedimentary rocks and lava flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Superficial deposits<\/strong>: deposits of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quaternary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Quaternary<\/a>&nbsp;age and generally unlithified, which overlie the bedrock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Citation<strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Please cite the lexicon as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>British Geological Survey. 2020.
