These informal settlements lack essential services including sanitation, which results in the release of untreated faecal matter and associated organic emerging contaminants (EC). These threaten human life and ecological status because they <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>disrupt human immune, nervous and reproductive systems<\/li><li>increase bacterial resistance<\/li><li>provide a growth medium for <em>Salmonella<\/em>, cholera, diarrhoea, typhoid and hepatitis A<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The complex chemical mixture causes nutrient enrichment, eutrophication, toxic algal blooms and water column anoxia, which in turn can lead to a reduction in species diversity and ecosystem instability.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure  class=\"img-wrap\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/contaminants.jpg\" data-toggle=\"lightbox\" data-footer=\"&lt;p&gt;Collection of samples for the baseline survey.
