Our researchers are involved in many aspects of landslide research with the primary objective of building resilience both in the UK and internationally. This research is funded through commercial, grant funded and public science role projects and is published in reports, web pages and peer-reviewed publications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Current projects<\/h2>\n\n\n<div  class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"acc-top secondary-background icon-arrow button no-btn\"><span class=\"button-content\" tabindex=\"-1\">Landslide trigger threshold values<\/span><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-body sea-background-e\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Trigger threshold values (TTVs) are measurements of the process intensities that drive a geohazard. For example, this might be the magnitude of an earthquake that triggers landslides in areas of earthquake-induced landsliding.<\/p>\n<p>Earthquake-triggered landslides are relatively rare in the UK, where the key trigger for landsliding is rainfall. Determining the TTV for rainfall-induced landslides is challenging because the TTV varies with the type of soil, which may bring forth the effect of antecedent conditions, i.e. the soil moisture conditions prior to an event.<\/p>\n<p>TTVs also vary with rainfall intensity. Our researchers investigate TTVs in a variety of ways that primarily reflect data availability:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>analysis of historic landslide events in the context of the associated weather conditions (antecedent and event-day precipitation) leading to the event trigger<\/li>\n<li>statistical methods are applied at a range of scales. At a coarse level, we provide a monthly analysis of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/landslides\/landslides-and-rainfall\/\">landslides and rainfall<\/a><\/li>\n<li>deterministic analyses of antecedent soil moisture conditions considering soil properties (porosity; saturated coefficient of permeability; soil water characteristics curve) in the context of observed and forecasted meteorological conditions<\/li>\n<li>analysis of analogues for soil moisture, such as electrical resistivity (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/geophysical-tomography\/technologies\/proactive-infrastructure-monitoring-and-evaluation-prime-system\/\">PRIME<\/a>) and meteorological conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32335\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Daily_landslide_hazard.jpg\" alt=\"Daily landslide hazard\" width=\"666\" height=\"345\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 BGS\/UKRI.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><div  class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"acc-top secondary-background icon-arrow button no-btn\"><span class=\"button-content\" tabindex=\"-1\">Landslide susceptibility<\/span><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-body sea-background-e\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We are carrying out ongoing landslide susceptibility research at higher resolutions and in the context of specific styles of landsliding.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/datasets\/bgs-geosure-landslides\/\">BGS GeoSure: landslides<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/datasets\/bgs-geosure-debris-flow\/\">BGS GeoSure: debris flow<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><div  class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"acc-top secondary-background icon-arrow button no-btn\"><span class=\"button-content\" tabindex=\"-1\">International research: LANDSLIP<\/span><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-body sea-background-e\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.landslip.org\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LANDSLIP<\/a> is funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Department for International Development (DFID) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shear.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science for Humanitarian Emergencies and Resilience<\/a> programme, which aims to support improved disaster resilience and humanitarian response by advancing monitoring, assessment and modelling for the prediction of natural hazards and risks in India.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><div  class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"acc-top secondary-background icon-arrow button no-btn\"><span class=\"button-content\" tabindex=\"-1\">Landslide observatories <\/span><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-body sea-background-e\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This research is focused on the landslide processes associated with coastal erosion and it is focused on coastal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/landslides\/landslide-observatories\/\">landslide observatories<\/a>, including Aldbrough in Yorkshire.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><div  class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"acc-top secondary-background icon-arrow button no-btn\"><span class=\"button-content\" tabindex=\"-1\">Landslide modelling<\/span><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-body sea-background-e\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/hazard-and-resilience-modelling\/\">hazard and resilience modellers<\/a> use a range of techniques that reflect the scale of modelling (national to site scale), the style of landslides and the availability of data. Methods include heuristic, statistical and deterministic approaches.
