Some inhabitants would also have obtained water from shallow dug wells. With rapid growth, the city has increasingly relied on water pumped from the River Cauvery, but this involves pumping water from over 100\u00a0km away and the river is 500\u00a0m below the city. <\/p>\n\n\n<figure  class=\"img-wrap\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Bangalore.png\" data-toggle=\"lightbox\" data-footer=\"&lt;p&gt;A traditional well on the outskirts of Bangalore, now dry as water levels have fallen. BGS \u00a9 UKRI.&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-gallery=\"gallery_98422\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/bgs\/img\/expand.svg\" alt=\"Expand icon\"><\/a><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Shallow wells have been replaced by deeper boreholes, but the granitic and gneissic bedrock has relatively low storage capacity and many boreholes owners struggle to obtain the water they need.\u00a0Perennial water shortages have led to a renewal of interest in the role of the tanks and whether they can be used to enhance groundwater recharge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BGS scientists have been working with the <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iisc.ac.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indian Institute of Science<\/a>, Bangalore, and the <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atree.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ashoka Trust for Environmental Education<\/a> to develop an understanding of the interaction between public water supply systems, sewage systems, the tanks and groundwater.
