class=\"wp-block-heading\">European geochemical mapping projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We have collaborated with collagues across Europe in a range of geochemical mapping projects, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/applied-geochemistry\/international-geochemistry\/foregs\/\">Forum of European Geological Surveys<\/a> (FOREGS)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/applied-geochemistry\/international-geochemistry\/gemas\/\">Geochemical Mapping of Agricultural Soils of Europe<\/a> (GEMAS)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schweizerbart.de\/publications\/detail\/isbn\/9783443010676\/Geochemistry-of-European-Bottled-Water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geochemistry of European Bottled Water<\/a> \u2014 we provided UK bottled water samples for this project<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eurogeosurveys.org\/egs-publications\/urban-topsoil-geochemical-mapping-manual-urge-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Urban Topsoil Geochemical Mapping Manual<\/a> (URGE II)  \u2014 recommendations for standardised urban geochemical mapping in Europe<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tellusborder.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tellus Border<\/a> \u2014 BGS staff were seconded from the BGS G-BASE project to assist with the geochemical mapping programme in the Republic of Ireland<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<div  class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"acc-top secondary-background icon-arrow button no-btn\"><span class=\"button-content\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>International regional geochemical mapping<\/strong> (outside Europe)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>BGS staff have and continue to contribute to the development of international geochemical mapping methods and understanding, including to the International Union of Geological Sciences&#8217; <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalgeochemicalbaselines.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Geochemical Baselines<\/a> project, which we co-led between 1994 and 2005. This project aims to standardise geochemical mapping at the global scale to provide systematic geochemical baseline information for the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geokniga.org\/bookfiles\/geokniga-global-geochemical-database-environmental-and-resource-managment.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">&nbsp;A Global Geochemical Database for Environmental and Resource Management<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Major geochemical mapping projects in the 1970s, 80s and early 90s were sponsored by the UK Overseas Development (ODA), now the <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-international-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department for International Development<\/a> (DfID).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Results from these early ODA projects exist in hardcopy reports or geochemical atlases. Digital data for Sumatra (Indonesia), Eastern Bolivia, Northern Peru, Kenya (Samburu-Marsabit), Zimbabwe (north-east and Harare) and Solomon Islands (Choiseul and New Georgia) are available on CD as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/applied-geochemistry\/international-geochemistry-cd-rom\/\">International Regional Geochemistry CD-ROM series<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more recent geochemical mapping projects have been funded by national governments or international development banks, e.g. Ecuador, Morocco, Mauritania, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/download\/international-geochemistry-madagascar-in2005-6_mad\/\">Madagascar<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/applied-geochemistry\/international-geochemistry\/nigeria\/\">Nigeria<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Responsibility for the geochemical reports and results for such projects rests with the respective geological surveys but we retain the knowledge and experience from completing such work.<\/p>\n\n\n<div  class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"acc-top secondary-background icon-arrow button no-btn\"><span class=\"button-content\" tabindex=\"-1\">References<\/span><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-body sea-background-e\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Jones, R C, and Coats, J S. 1993. projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Environmental geochemistry is principally concerned with understanding the sources, distribution, transport and fate of chemical substances in the surface environment, their chemical forms and pathways, to aid environmental management and protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/medical-geochemistry\/\">Medical geology\/geochemistry and health<\/a> investigations apply this information to examine the uptake of substances into air, water, agricultural crops and animals and their effects on the health of plants, animals and
