Source: BGS \u00a9 UKRI.&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-gallery=\"gallery_12186\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/bgs\/img\/expand.svg\" alt=\"Expand icon\"><\/a><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Past and present work areas in the UKOTs and their associated territorial waters spans a wide range of activities, including: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>advice related to hydrocarbon exploration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>climate variability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>disaster risk reduction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>geological mapping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>groundwater resource and security<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>marine ecosystems and habitats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>monitoring and observatories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>multi-hazards and risk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>prospectivity analysis and resource assessments based on detailed characterisation of the subsurface<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>seabed bathymetry and geology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>volcanic processes and histories<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the UKOTs are small islands that are particularly vulnerable to natural hazards and climate change, facing challenges associated with their small scale or geographic isolation even without natural hazards events or decadal-scale change in their environmental conditions. Many are exposed to and regularly adversely affected by geohazards, hydrometeorological hazards and climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is significant onshore and offshore resource potential in some of the UKOTs and others host critical UK and global strategic research and security infrastructure (including civilian, government and military). Collectively, the UKOTs host a permanent civilian population of approximately 250&nbsp;000 (not including the British Antarctic Territory, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, and the British Indian Ocean Territory). They have a land area of 1.72 million&nbsp;km<sup>2<\/sup> and much larger marine territories, including one of the largest offshore Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) in the world, at 6.03&nbsp;million km<sup>2<\/sup>.
