When it comes to planning, we often focus on the visible parts of our towns and cities and forget the complex and valuable ground beneath our feet: &#8216;Project Iceberg&#8217; is named to remind us not to forget what we can&#8217;t see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An integrated city data system above and below ground<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Project Iceberg aims to address the serious issue of the lack of information about the ground beneath our cities and the un-coordinated way in which the subsurface space is managed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The long-term goal is to help increase the viability of land for development and de-risk future investment through better management of subsurface data. To help achieve this, our study aims to enable a means to discover and access relevant data about the ground&#8217;s physical condition, and assets housed within it, in a way that is suitable for modern, data-driven, decision-making processes. BGS \u00a9 UKRI.&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-gallery=\"gallery_50935\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/bgs\/img\/expand.svg\" alt=\"Expand icon\"><\/a><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UK subsurface infrastructure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are more than 1.5 million kilometres of underground services \u2014 water, sewer, gas and electricity services \u2014 in the UK and an estimated four million kilometres or more of data lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lack of coordination and collaboration has many costs. The Department of Transport estimates that street works account for an estimated annual cost of \u00a34.3&nbsp;billion. Meanwhile, the Treasury estimated in 2013 that greater cross-infrastructure collaboration can save the economy an estimated \u00a33&nbsp;billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We could do things both more efficiently and more quickly with subsurface data.&nbsp;For example, an A$2&nbsp;billion light rail scheme in Sydney could have been built 1.5 years earlier if they had reliable underground utility information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The benefits of subsurface data <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The delivery of successful urban regeneration and construction projects depends on our knowledge of the subsurface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A national subsurface data-exchange framework that integrates with surface-city data can realise the potential of new technologies. MTU devices can help to determine the direction of the cables and adjust and update data in the model.<\/li>\n<li>Through an invasive investigation an unknown pipe is discovered. The developer is presented with different solutions or alternatives. The model can then be updated.<\/li>\n<li>Searchable model with accurate picture of what&#8217;s underground to inform developers and teams.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits overview<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many potential benefits of an integrated data system.
