The majority of this growth has been in low- to middle-income countries as people migrate out of low-density, rural environments to highly dense, urban centres. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The towns and cities of the developing world are expected to make up 80 per cent of urban humanity by 2030. This growing &#8216;densification&#8217; of humanity increases the potential effects of natural hazards such as earthquakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are working closely with the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalquakemodel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Global Earthquake Model Foundation<\/a> to understand the seismic hazard and risk to urban centres around the world, so-called \u2018seismic cities\u2019. Source: BGS \u00a9 UKRI&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-gallery=\"gallery_44615\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/bgs\/img\/expand.svg\" alt=\"Expand icon\"><\/a><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assessing vulnerability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our main aim is to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/geodesy\/insar-research\/\">InSAR Earth observation techniques<\/a> to detect and monitor ground motion that may be related to active faulting, along with seismic risk calculations to explore the losses to the city from potential earthquakes. We have now also expanded the seismic cities concept to Bandung, Indonesia, thanks to funding from the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">British Academy<\/a> and the Global Geological Risk Research Platform of the British Geological Survey NC-ODA grant NE\/R000069\/1: Geoscience for Sustainable Futures. We are also now working with partners in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, thanks to funding from the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/royalsociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the onset, the projects have been partnerships between researchers and stakeholders and across disciplines from psychology, crowd science and geophysics. Our partners have included in particular <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cigiden.cl\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">CIGIDEN<\/a> in Chile, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itb.ac.id\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bandung Institute of Technology<\/a> (ITB) and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.seismology.kz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Institute of Seismology<\/a> in Bishkek, alongside governments, resilience officers, universities and local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Science through art<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A novel and rewarding approach in the Santiago and Bandung projects has been the use of art as a medium to explore the human and social experience of earthquakes.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure  class=\"img-wrap\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/bandung_sculpture.jpg\" data-toggle=\"lightbox\" data-footer=\"&lt;p&gt;A sculpture created by a local artist in Bandung, which explores the relationship between people, topography and earthquake faults.
