This is referred to as the National Geological Screening (NGS) exercise. The outcome of the exercise is a series of 13 Regional Summary reports corresponding to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.bgs.ac.uk\/data\/publications\/home.cfm\">BGS Regional Guide series<\/a>\u00a0areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each report describes geological features relevant to the safety requirements of a geological disposal facility (GDF) for radioactive waste emplaced onshore and up to 20&nbsp;km offshore at depths between 200 and 1000&nbsp;m from the surface. The geological topics considered in the exercise are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>rock type<\/li><li>rock structure<\/li><li>groundwater<\/li><li>natural processes<\/li><li>resources<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The reports<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The NGS reports were written for a technical audience to inform Nuclear Waste Services in its discussions with communities interested in finding out about the potential for their area to host a GDF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reports for each of the 13 regions can be accessed by clicking the relevant region on Map 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An appendix (Appendix A) to the 13 reports was also produced, providing an overview of the structural evolution of the British Isles.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section The methodology, termed <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/510689\/national-geological-screening_detailed-technical-instructions-and-protocols.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detailed technical instructions<\/a> (DTI), developed by BGS scientists in collaboration with Nuclear Waste Services  safety case experts, was evaluated by an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geolsoc.org.uk\/irp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">independent review panel<\/a> of the Geological Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the methodology used to undertake the NGS was developed jointly with Nuclear Waste Services, the individual regional reports for England, Wales and Northern Ireland were compiled solely by BGS scientists, using only publicly available geological information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions or queries relating to geological aspects of the NGS exercise can be requested by contacting&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:enquiries@bgs.ac.uk?subject=National%20Geological%20Screening\">BGS Enquiries<\/a>.
