BGS \u00a9 UKRI.&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-gallery=\"gallery_70548\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/bgs\/img\/expand.svg\" alt=\"Expand icon\"><\/a><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\n\n<p>Analysis carried out by the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/climate-guide\" target=\"_blank\">Met Office<\/a>&nbsp;shows that the UK is experiencing more extreme rainfall events and that this is likely to be linked to climate change. The UK experienced several months of above-average rainfall from April to December 2012, making it one of the wettest periods of time for most of the country since meteorological records began. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout this period, and into early 2013, a marked increase in the number of landslides was widely reported and captured in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/landslides\/national-landslide-database\/\">National Landslide Database<\/a>. Further well-publicised storm events in the winter of 2015 caused another peak in the landslide graph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Landslides occurring after periods of intense, heavy rainfall are likely to result from one or more of the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>water loading of the slope<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduction in soil strength<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>removal of soil particles <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>other material changes in the slope<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data collection, communication and social media<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.geomorph.2015.03.013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">routinely collecting data from&nbsp;ongoing regional geological surveys<\/a>&nbsp;and the published scientific literature, the online press has been monitored for information about landslides through various internet search engines since 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In August 2012, social media were incorporated into this search.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BGSLandslides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twitter<\/a>&nbsp;has proved to be the most prolific source of information, as it has for other geohazards such as&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.annalsofgeophysics.eu\/index.php\/annals\/article\/view\/5364\/5494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">earthquakes<\/a>&nbsp;and<a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1109.1618\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;tsunamis<\/a>, as well as an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GDACS\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">early warning system<\/a>&nbsp;around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tweets are mainly in response to events that have an immediate impact on society, such as travel disruption, which are often small slope failures.
