{"id":88896,"date":"2022-08-25T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-25T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/?p=88896"},"modified":"2024-03-05T15:07:38","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T15:07:38","slug":"bgs-joins-the-uk-centre-for-seabed-mapping-to-raise-data-and-mapping-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/news\/bgs-joins-the-uk-centre-for-seabed-mapping-to-raise-data-and-mapping-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"BGS joins the UK Centre for Seabed Mapping to raise data and mapping standards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-bgs-blocks-content-container content-section\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12\">\n<p>BGS is one of the latest Government organisations to join the newly unveiled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.admiralty.co.uk\/uk-centre-for-seabed-mapping\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK Centre for Seabed Mapping<\/a> (UK CSM), helping to boost marine data and mapping standards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK CSM is a new initiative designed to increase the global coverage, quality and accessibility of seabed mapping data through national collaboration. The centre is administered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/ukho-calls-for-uk-government-organisations-involved-in-seabed-mapping-to-join-newly-unveiled-uk-centre-for-seabed-mapping--2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK Hydrographic Office<\/a> (UKHO)<strong> <\/strong>and it aims to support a more integrated marine geospatial sector for the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quality marine geospatial data is essential for almost every activity undertaken in the marine domain, including: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>maritime trade<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>environmental and resource management <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shipping operations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>national security and infrastructure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>BGS has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UKHO on behalf of UK CSM, outlining UKHO&#8217;s commitment to being a member of UK CSM. Under the agreement, BGS will work collaboratively with a number of UK Government organisations in a coordinated approach to the collection, management and access of seabed mapping data.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t\t<blockquote id=\"quote-2106-block_d9d67c75aed7d0f5788bb914b52921ae\" class=\"quote  \" >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"quote-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/bgs\/img\/quote-caption.svg\" alt=\"Speech marks icon\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"quote-text\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>UK CSM and its coordinated approach is essential to enable a more unified voice and raise the profile of seabed mapping.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>BGS has a rich history of managing marine data and seabed geological mapping. This this partnership will ensure\u00a0 UK CSM benefits from impartial geological expertise, data and information to help increase the coverage, quality and access of seabed mapping data collected both by public funded projects and through industry. This will significantly improve future understanding of the UK seabed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Mary Mowat, <\/strong><strong>BGS Data Manager.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\n\n\n<p>The MoU sets out ways of working between BGS and UKHO\/UK CSM to support the UK CSM\u2019s activity and describes key areas for collaboration, including data sharing, information reporting and policy input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The core focus of the partnership will be bathymetry, and its associated data, in order to improve the foundation dataset within the marine environment.
