Geologists&#8217; top ten favourite seaside holiday spots"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-bgs-blocks-content-container content-section\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12\">\n<p>Professional and budding geologists across the UK are heading to the coast this summer hoping to do a bit of rock spotting alongside sunbathing and building sandcastles with their kids. Armed with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/map-viewers\/bgs-geology-viewer\/\">BGS Geology Viewer<\/a>, they will be able to identify exactly what rocks they are looking at and get the full information on the geology from the databanks at the BGS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BGS has identified ten areas that are likely to be holiday destinations for geologists:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#brighton\">Brighton and Hove<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#ullapool\">Ullapool<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#lulworth\">Lulworth Cove<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#lyme\">Lyme Regis<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#skye\">Isle of Skye<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#wight\">Isle of Wight<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#lizard\">Lizard Point<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#babbacombe\">Babbacombe<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#arran\">Isle of Arran<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#conwy\">Conwy<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"brighton\">Brighton and Hove, East Sussex<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The chalk cliffs and the corresponding outcrops inland have attracted much attention over the centuries because of their high fossil content. One of the most significant fossil finds was the discovery of the fossil skeleton and teeth of an <em>Iguanodon<\/em>, a Cretaceous dinosaur, by Gideon Mantell in 1822. Due to the incompleteness of the first fossil discoveries, Mantell initially placed what he thought was a horn on the nose of the dinosaur. The rocks exposed provide a continuous sequence covering 80 million years of Earth history from the Jurassic to the Cretaceous Periods. They include a variety of rock types and structures such as the contorted Lulworth Crumple and Stair Hole. One of the most famous fossil collectors from the town was Mary Anning, whose discoveries of Jurassic marine fossils in the 19th century were some of the most significant of all time. The oldest Cretaceous rocks (125 to 100 million years old) are sandstones and mudstones that formed in rivers and floodplains and contain a number of dinosaur fossils. The next rocks that formed and the ones found at St Catharine&#8217;s Point are mainly sandstone and marine clays that formed between 110 and 100 million years ago in an ancient tropical sea. Ophiolites are so special as they offer a rare opportunity to view the rocks that make up the oceanic crust. At the Lizard there are three main units: the serpentinites (metamorphosed and deformed remains of the upper mantle), the oceanic complex (made up of what was the oceanic crust), and the metamorphic basement (representing the continental crust). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/largeimages.bgs.ac.uk\/iip\/mapsportal.html?id=1001837\" target=\"_blank\">Geological map of Lizard<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"babbacombe\">Babbacombe, Devon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The rocks at Oddicombe Beach in Babbacombe Bay are breccias of Permian age (280 to 300 million years old). Whilst visiting Lochranza in 1787, the geologist James Hutton noticed that the layers of rocks at the bottom of the sequence were nearly vertical whilst the overlying rocks were almost horizontal. He made the assumption that the lower rocks had been tilted and then eroded before the upper rocks were deposited. Evidence gathered here and at other sites helped Hutton to prove that the two different rock formations were formed at different times and went on to contribute to his theory on the age of the Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/largeimages.bgs.ac.uk\/iip\/mapsportal.html?id=1002532\" target=\"_blank\">Geological map of Arran<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<figure  class=\"img-wrap\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Arran-P579171-150x150.jpg\" class=\"lazy-blur\" alt=\"North Goatfell. Rhyolite is the extrusive (or volcanic) equivalent of granite and usually forms as highly viscous and often extremely explosive lava.
