{"id":103630,"date":"2023-07-17T14:16:23","date_gmt":"2023-07-17T14:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/?p=103630"},"modified":"2024-02-27T14:20:14","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T14:20:14","slug":"new-report-assesses-deep-geothermal-energy-in-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/news\/new-report-assesses-deep-geothermal-energy-in-the-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"New report assesses deep geothermal energy in the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-bgs-blocks-content-container content-section\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12\">\n<p>BGS, in collaboration with Arup, was commissioned by the North East Local Enterprise Partnership to develop a White Paper entitled \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.northeastlep.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/The-case-for-deep-geothermal-energy-\u2013-unlocking-investment-at-scale-in-the-UK.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The case for deep geothermal energy \u2014 unlocking investment at scale in the UK<\/a>\u2019. It provides an evidence-based assessment of the opportunities and makes recommendations for building the deep geothermal sector in the UK. The report was funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the North East and Yorkshire Net Zero Hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key recommendations from the report are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>undertake a review of financial support for geothermal energy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>clearly outline the role of geothermal energy in the UK\u2019s net zero efforts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>improve data availability and accessibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>review the legal status, regulation and licencing of geothermal energy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>develop an understanding of the public perception of geothermal energy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>support communication between stakeholder groups<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\t\t\t<blockquote id=\"quote-1089-block_da7d56b392b773d278df2593a1208f69\" class=\"quote  \" >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"quote-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/bgs\/img\/quote-caption.svg\" alt=\"Speech marks icon\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"quote-text\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Geothermal energy provides a unique opportunity to deliver a low-carbon energy source to many areas of the UK, specifically for heating.<\/p>\n<p>This White Paper highlights opportunities where deep geothermal energy could help the UK meet its net zero objectives, increase energy supply security, deliver economic benefits and create the green jobs of the future to improve our communities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Corinna Abesser, BGS Director of Policy and lead author of the report.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\n\n\n<p>Geothermal energy is energy produced and stored as heat in the subsurface. It can provide an ultra-low-carbon source for heating, cooling and power generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current high costs of drilling restrict the use of geothermal energy to areas with certain geological settings. As technologies improve and new extraction methods are developed, more areas should become economically viable for geothermal exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the UK\u2019s onshore deep geothermal potential is found in deeply buried (deeper than 500 m) limestones and sandstones in sedimentary basins. Groundwater within these rocks may reach temperatures of more than 100\u00b0C but more data from deep wells and from operational geothermal projects is \u00a0needed to estimate the economically usable portion of the energy. In some areas, hot granites provide a potential source for geothermal power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are currently two deep geothermal projects in development or operation in Cornwall for provision of heat and power, including the Eden Geothermal project, and three other UK sites are currently using geothermal water from springs or shallower wells for heat.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deep geothermal energy already delivers environmental, economic and technical advantages in countries with similar geology to the UK, such as the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Advantages include greenhouse gas emission reductions and job generation. They have also shown that deep geothermal sources are viable to provide long-term or large-scale district heating and cooling.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure  class=\"img-wrap\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Picture1-1.jpg\" data-toggle=\"lightbox\" data-footer=\"&lt;p&gt;Map showing the location of the potential deep geothermal targets and current geothermal development sites across the UK.
