It continues dry for about a kilometre until it reaches Lathkill House Cave, where the water, which has flowed underground from the Flagg area, resurges from the cave \u2014 or at least it does when the weather is wet. In times of drought there may be no water in the stream for another kilometre. From here the river becomes a famous trout-fishing river, described by the writer Izaak Walton, author of <em>The Compleat Angler<\/em>, to be the &#8216;purest and most transparent stream&#8217; he had ever seen. Parts of the dale are colonised by Jacob&#8217;s Ladder, a rare plant that flowers in June and July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ricklow Quarry and <em>Gigantoproductus<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ricklow Quarry contains rock faces where the sheer number of huge <em>Gigantoproductus<\/em> fossils is mind boggling.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure  class=\"img-wrap\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Lathkill_Dale_Ricklow_quarry_web.jpg\" data-toggle=\"lightbox\" data-footer=\"&lt;p&gt;Ricklow Quarry, a site of Special Scientific Interest. BGS \u00a9 UKRI.&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-gallery=\"gallery_52050\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/bgs\/img\/expand.svg\" alt=\"Expand icon\"><\/a><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>The genus&nbsp;<em>Gigantoproductus<\/em>&nbsp;contains the largest brachiopod specimens ever recorded&nbsp;and these most commonly occur in shell beds or lenses.&nbsp;<em>Gigantoproductus<\/em>&nbsp;is distinguished by its large size, shallow&nbsp;corpus cavity, irregular ribbing and fluting, and the&nbsp;occurrence of dorsal brachial cones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The northern faces of Ricklow Quarry contain enormous numbers of  <em>Gigantoproductus<\/em> fossils stacked on top of each other.
