The NGDC is recognised as the <a href=\"https:\/\/nerc.ukri.org\/research\/sites\/environmental-data-service-eds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NERC Environmental Data Centre<\/a> for geoscience data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NGDC is responsible for managing geoscientifically valuable information and datasets. The data it holds covers many geological disciplines dealing with the physical structure of the Earth and the processes that act on it, as measured from geological time to near-real-time sensor and data streams. It is the NGDC policy to preserve this data, which underpins the existing scientific record, and make it accessible for future re-use to a wide range of user communities. <\/p>\n\n\n<div  class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"acc-top secondary-background icon-arrow button no-btn\"><span class=\"button-content\" tabindex=\"-1\">Remit and scope of NGDC<\/span><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-body sea-background-e\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It is the policy of NGDC to store data that is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>of high quality, scientifically significant and of potential research or commercial interest to scientists, academics or policymakers in the future<\/li>\n<li>a geoscience data output from NERC\/UKRI-funded earth science projects and programmes<\/li>\n<li>digitally borne, enabling easy future re-use and access by a diverse range of end-user communities<\/li>\n<li>preserved in the long term to maintain its accessibility and usability by taking appropriate digital-preservation actions throughout the data lifecycle<\/li>\n<li>deposited by the owner or someone who has the rights to donate the data to NGDC (therefore granting NGDC a non-exclusive &#8216;in-perpetuity licence&#8217; to hold and disseminate the data)<\/li>\n<li>compliant with our data policy and data value checklist<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is also the statutory responsibility of the NGDC to receive data associated with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>boreholes drilled from the surface to a depth of more than 30 m for mineral exploration or extraction purposes (Mining Industry Act 1926)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.bgs.ac.uk\/services\/NGDC\/records\/notification\/form.html\">boreholes drilled deeper than 15 m for water<\/a>(Water Resources Act 1991 and Water (Scotland) Act 1980)<\/li>\n<li>hydrocarbon well data (as per PON9\/9b)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is the policy of NGDC to ensure data is deposited with the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>standards-compliant metadata that explains the dataset, makes it easy to discover and facilitates re-use<\/li>\n<li>terms and conditions that clearly define how the data can be used in the future (NGDC prefer to hold data with no access or use restrictions \u2014 &#8216;open data&#8217;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is the policy of NGDC to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>store a copy of the data &#8216;as supplied&#8217; in a data-holding store (in an agreed format)<\/li>\n<li>incorporate (when funding permits) the data within our existing, nationally consistent datasets<\/li>\n<li>provide data management advice and guidance to geoscientists working on earth science projects<\/li>\n<li>ensure the data is discoverable and provide open access to any unrestricted data held in the data-holding store or the nationally consistent datasets<\/li>\n<li>create on request digital object identifiers (DOIs), facilitating data citation, for appropriate digital datasets and display these alongside the data<\/li>\n<li>encourage the use of these datasets for a full range of academic and commercial purposes, including future scientific projects and within information products or decision support systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><div  class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"acc-top secondary-background icon-arrow button no-btn\"><span class=\"button-content\" tabindex=\"-1\">Notification to drill information<\/span><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-body sea-background-e\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n<li>All those drilling boreholes covered by statute, or those wishing to donate information on a voluntary basis, must complete a <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.bgs.ac.uk\/services\/NGDC\/records\/notification\/form.html\">notification of intent<\/a> to construct new wells and boreholes and the subsequent provision of information form.<\/li>\n<li>Guide to the Mining Industry Act 1926, which covers all boreholes drilled for minerals reaching a depth of more than 30\u00a0m. This leads to resilient and robust data assets of long-term value to be deposited at the NGDC.<\/li>\n<li>The NGDC has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/download\/bgs-digital-preservation-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">digital preservation policy<\/a> to ensure the long-term continuity of digital geoscience data in its care.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalarchives.gov.uk\/doc\/open-government-licence\/version\/3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Open Government Licence<\/a> (OGL) is a simple set of terms and conditions that facilitates the re-use of a wide range of public sector information free of charge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"faqs\">FAQs<\/h2>\n\n\n<div  class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"acc-top secondary-background icon-arrow button no-btn\"><span class=\"button-content\" tabindex=\"-1\">Depositing data and records with NGDC<\/span><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-body sea-background-e\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>How do I deposit my data with NGDC?<\/h3>\n<p>All data should be deposited through the <a href=\"http:\/\/transfer.bgs.ac.uk\/ingestion\">NGDC Digital Data Deposit application<\/a>. This will enable us to capture the necessary contact information, metadata and the terms and conditions of the deposit. Please follow the simple step-by-step process. Guidance is available on the application.<\/p>\n<h3>My data is over the recommended size limit; how do I deposit it?<\/h3>\n<p>At the \u2018upload files\u2019 page of the application, check the box that states that you are \u2018not uploading any files\u2019 and put in \u2018Description of contents\u2019 how you\u2019ll be delivering\/transferring the data. Our preferred method of data transfer is via a ShareFile link, which can be requested from the NGDC.<\/p>\n<h3>Where do the liabilities lie with deposited data?<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/download\/ngdc-terms-and-conditions\/\">NGDC terms and conditions<\/a> include a liability statement for both depositors and users of our data. In summary, the use of information provided by the NGDC is at the users own risk, therefore there is no liability to BGS, the data creator or the owner.<\/p>\n<h3>How do I request a DOI for my data?<\/h3>\n<p>After submitting your data via the application and receiving your email confirmation, please email your DOI request to <a href=\"mailto:ngdc@bgs.ac.uk\">NGDC<\/a> quoting the BGS submission ID.<\/p>\n<h3>Can I send paper records to NGDC?<\/h3>\n<p>We prefer to receive and store digital data through the application. If you wish to deposit hard copy (paper) records, which are unique and have no access or use restrictions, please contact <a href=\"mailto:ngdc@bgs.ac.uk\">NGDC<\/a> and provide a description including the quantity of records. Please bear in mind that, because many historic wells have not been recorded, the records are not comprehensive.\u00a0 This means that you may not find the well you are looking for in our records.<\/p>\n<p>More recent borehole records may be in our <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.bgs.ac.uk\/services\/ngdc\/accessions\/index.html\">deposited data search<\/a> and offshore wells can be found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/mapapps2.bgs.ac.uk\/geoindex_offshore\/home.html\">offshore GeoIndex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If we do not hold a record of your well, we would be keen to receive the details. You can deposit your driller\u2019s log <!--or, if you don\u2019t have one, complete the NGDC water borehole form with any details you know (e.g. location, depth, diameter and depth to water) and upload it to--> via the <a href=\"http:\/\/transfer.bgs.ac.uk\/ingestion\">NGDC Digital Data Deposit Application<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other sources of information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>old wells and pumps are often shown on the historic, large-scale Ordnance Survey maps. These may be marked with W (well), P (pump) or Spr (spring) although, depending on the age of the map, these symbols may have been used for other features.\u00a0 You can access a selection of these maps on the <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.nls.uk\/os\/\">National Library of Scotland<\/a> website. Under the legislation, BGS must be provided with <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.bgs.ac.uk\/services\/NGDC\/records\/notification\/form.html\">notification of drilling<\/a> before drilling commences for any borehole more than 15\u00a0m deep and the subsequent records of the drilling must be deposited through the <a href=\"http:\/\/transfer.bgs.ac.uk\/ingestion\">NGDC Digital Data Deposit Application<\/a> using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/download\/wr38-borehole-record-form\/\">borehole record form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you are intending to abstract more than 20\u00a0m3\/d in England and Wales, you will need to apply for an abstraction licence from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/abstracting-water-a-guide-to-getting-your-licence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environment Agency<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalresources.wales\/permits-and-permissions\/water-abstraction-and-impoundment\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Natural Resources Wales<\/a>. In Scotland, please consult the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sepa.org.uk\/regulations\/water\/abstractions\/#four\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SEPA<\/a> website to make an appropriate application to abstract more than 10\u00a0m<sup>3<\/sup>\/d.<\/p>\n<p>Your local council\u2019s Environmental Health department can advise on appropriate water quality testing. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dwi.gov.uk\/private-water-supplies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drinking Water Inspectorate<\/a> website provides more information on private water supplies in England and Wales. In Scotland, this function is carried out by the Drinking Water Quality Regulator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: BGS is not the statutory authority with regard to groundwater resources, protection and abstraction in the UK, therefore BGS cannot give permission to drill.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>BGS cannot provide information regarding the necessary planning permission. These enquiries should be directed to the relevant local authority.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>How and when do I submit a notification to drill ?<\/h3>\n<p>Please submit your notification to drill prior to the commencement of drilling using the notification of <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.bgs.ac.uk\/services\/NGDC\/records\/notification\/form.html\">intention to drill<\/a> form. This is a superficial deposit or bedrock formation that can yield water; the best aquifers are generally sandstones, limestones and well-fractured rocks. Mudstones do not typically yield useful supplies of groundwater.\u00a0 You can find out if you are likely to be able to abstract water by ordering a <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.bgs.ac.uk\/Shop\/Product\/GRC_C105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">water borehole prognosis<\/a> report for your site.<\/p>\n<h3>How do I order a site-specific water borehole prognosis?<\/h3>\n<p>Interpreting all the information is complicated and BGS offers a site-specific <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.bgs.ac.uk\/Shop\/Product\/GRC_C105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">water borehole prognosis<\/a> report service. This gives an evaluation of the geological formations beneath the site in terms of aquifer potential, including yields, water levels and groundwater quality. It also contains recommendations on the design of the proposed water borehole and information on the legal requirements.<\/p>\n<h3>How do I get my borehole\/well\/spring water-quality tested?<\/h3>\n<p>Your local Environmental Health department will be able to advise on what tests need to be carried out and laboratories that can undertake the work.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dwi.gov.uk\/private-water-supplies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drinking Water Inspectorate<\/a> website provides more information on private water supplies in England and Wales, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/dwqr.scot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drinking Water Quality Regulator<\/a> in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>What groundwater information can I access freely online?<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/map-viewers\/geoindex-onshore\/\">GeoIndex<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/geologyviewer.bgs.ac.uk\/\">BGS Geology viewer<\/a> show the uppermost superficial and bedrock geology present.\u00a0 However, there may be different (and unmapped) types of rocks present between and beneath them. The scanned <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.bgs.ac.uk\/data\/maps\/\">1:50 000 geological maps<\/a> include diagrams that indicate the relationship between the different formations and their thicknesses.<\/p>\n<p>The GeoIndex and <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.bgs.ac.uk\/services\/ngdc\/accessions\/index.html\">deposited data search<\/a> also provide access to scans of nearby borehole
