Looking north.\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/National-Banner.jpg\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-bgs-blocks-content-container content-section\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12\">\n<p>The BGS National Geoscience programme forms a core part of the BGS and underpins our role as the UK\u2019s national geological survey.&nbsp; The programme is a forward-looking investment in UK geology that provides relevant, coherent and enriched geoscience knowledge for our stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme improves the understanding of the geology of the UK and its continental margin; it will also provide enhanced interpretations of the UK\u2019s sedimentary basins and basement in key areas for applied research and to support UK infrastructure. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme is creating new, quality-assured UK geological knowledge and data, both onshore and offshore, from mapping and modelling. We provide a range of geological services to external stakeholders, including commissioned applied research and geological characterisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research areas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme has three strategic research areas alongside several other core activities.<\/p>\n\n\n<div  class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t<div fracturing<\/span><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-body sea-background-e\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We are improving the structural understanding of the UK and continental margin by acquiring a coherent understanding of the tectonic framework of the UK and regional structural domains.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><div  class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"acc-top secondary-background icon-arrow button no-btn\"><span class=\"button-content\" tabindex=\"-1\">Sedimentary basin heterogeneity, stratigraphy and
