Information collected for the BGS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/landslides\/national-landslide-database\/\">National Landslide Database<\/a> (ID 18688\/1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Road closures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the fifth time the road has been closed in the last five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.bgs.ac.uk\/downloads\/start.cfm?id=1245\" class=\"broken_link\">October 2007<\/a>: a debris flow occurred after a period of heavy rainfall.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/case-studies\/rest-and-be-thankful-a83-2009-landslide-case-study\/\">September 2009<\/a>: a debris flow followed the existing 2007 landslide track.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/case-studies\/rest-and-be-thankful-a83-2011-landslide-case-study\/\">November 2011<\/a>: a translational landslide that degraded into a flow occurred to the south-east of the 2007\/2009 landslide.<\/li><li>February 2012: a small landslide (30\u201350 tonnes) occurred on 22 February 2012, setting off tiltmeter alarms. Although no debris from the landslide reached the road, the A83 was closed for two days as a precaution. BGS \u00a9 UKRI.&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-gallery=\"gallery_55402\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/bgs\/img\/expand.svg\" alt=\"Expand icon\"><\/a><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Geology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The area in which these failures have occurred is steeply sloping ground underlain by rocks of the <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.bgs.ac.uk\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?pub=DCBB\">Beinn Bheula Schist Formation<\/a>. These are composed of psammite and semi-pelite that are metamorphic in origin. These are composed largely of quartz, feldspar and mica minerals.  These rocks are commonly intensely foliated and spectacularly folded; extensive quartz lenses and veins also occur. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bedrock plays little part in the landslide activity on these slopes.  The recent landslides here have largely been associated with slope deposits, including peat and topsoil as well as the underlying layers of colluvium , whichcomprises sandy to gravelly silts and clays, with varying amounts of cobbles and boulders.
