The road was subsequently closed in both directions, resulting in a 26-mile diversion. The landslide occurred after 65.8&nbsp;mm of rain \u2014 a quarter of the expected average for the area in December \u2014 fell in 48 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure  class=\"img-wrap\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/RABT-location-150x150.jpg\" class=\"lazy-blur\" alt=\"Rest and Be Thankful (A83) location map.\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/RABT-location.jpg\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption sm-line\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"caption-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/bgs\/img\/info-caption.svg\" alt=\"Information icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"caption-text\"><p>Rest and Be Thankful (A83) location map. BGS \u00a9 UKRI.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Following the landslide, the road was fully closed for two days and was then only open during daylight hours for safety reasons from 3 December. The road was fully reopened at 08.30 hours on 13 December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the third time that this section of road has been closed in the last five years. The BGS Landslide Response Team surveyed the previous landslides in <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.bgs.ac.uk\/downloads\/start.cfm?id=1245\" class=\"broken_link\">2007<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/case-studies\/rest-and-be-thankful-a83-2009-landslide-case-study\/\">2009<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BGS Landslide Response Team made a visit to the landslide on 2 December 2011 to investigate the failure. Information collected from this survey is logged in the BGS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/landslides\/national-landslide-database\/\">National Landslide Database<\/a> ID 18264\/1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A further, smaller landslide (30\u201350 tonnes) occurred on 22 February 2012, setting off tiltmeter alarms. Although no debris from the landslide reached the road, the A83 was closed for two days as a precaution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">News reports<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2011 landslide was widely reported in the local and national news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-15981488\" target=\"_blank\">Slip could close A83 Rest and Be Thankful for 24 hours<\/a> 1 December 2011, BBC News<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-16154878\" target=\"_blank\">A83 Rest and Be Thankful road closed again at night<\/a> 13 December 2011, BBC News <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Geology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p> The geology of the site is described on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/case-studies\/rest-and-be-thankful-a83-2009-landslide-case-study\/\">2009 landslide page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Landslide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The landslide was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/discovering-geology\/earth-hazards\/landslides\/how-to-classify-a-landslide\/\">translational<\/a> slide that degraded into a flow as it passed over a local break of slope, moving approximately 100 tonnes of material. In the lower section of the slope it has exploited a small gully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new landslide is approximately 370\u00a0m south-east of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/download\/rest-and-be-thankful-landslide-2007-information-poster\/\">2007<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/case-studies\/rest-and-be-thankful-a83-2009-landslide-case-study\/\">2009<\/a> landslides, which exploited a much larger drainage channel.
