Through our principal funding body, the Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC), NGDC is part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eds.ukri.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NERC Environmental Data Service<\/a> (EDS), a network of five data centres working together to manage data across the environmental sciences.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NGDC&#8217;s role is to support NERC-funded researchers throughout the life cycle of their grants, from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/data-management-plans-dmps\">data management planning<\/a> to data deposit and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/citing-data\">data citation<\/a>. The staff within the data centre have a wealth of discipline-specific knowledge and can assist in a multitude of ways:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>advice on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/data-management-plans-dmps\">data management planning<\/a> and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/preferred-digital-formats\">preferred data formats<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>guidance on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/metadata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">metadata creation<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/citing-data\">data citation<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>guidance on preferred data formats, data transfers and ingestion&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>applying the FAIR principles to datasets&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>advice on relevant legislation (FOI; EIR; IPR),&nbsp;third-party ownership&nbsp;and data sharing&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>management of data embargoes, confidentiality and release of data&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>secure and long-term storage for data and materials&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>management of data-access requests&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<figure  class=\"img-wrap\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/P1033967.webp\" class=\"lazy-blur\" alt=\"P1033967\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/P1033967.webp\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption sm-line\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"caption-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/wp-content\/themes\/bgs\/img\/info-caption.svg\" alt=\"Information icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"caption-text\"><p>BGS staff conducting fieldwork in North Yorkshire BGS \u00a9 UKRI.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transferring data to NGDC&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Data should be deposited with NGDC directly after data creation or collection. This allows you to fulfil your NERC data policy requirement before analysis has begun and when you are still familiar with the structure of your data, rather than at the end of the funded project. Specific guidance on the management and deposit of model code and data can be found&nbsp;on our webpages.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Data transfer size&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deposits up to 20&nbsp;GB (capacity: 20 individual or zip files per upload, each less than 1&nbsp;GB)&nbsp;can be deposited via the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/deposit-data-with-ngdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NGDC Digital Data Deposit Application<\/a>. Full deposit guidance is on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/depositing-data\">depositing data page<\/a>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deposits up to 100&nbsp;GB can be transferred via the OneDrive secure online file transfer service. <a href=\"mailto:ngdc@bgs.ac.uk\">Contact NGDC<\/a> (ngdc@bgs.ac.uk) for a link and instructions to upload your data (ZIP files)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For deposits over 100&nbsp; GB, <a href=\"mailto:ngdc@bgs.ac.uk\">contact NGDC<\/a> (ngdc@bgs.ac.uk) to discuss the most appropriate transfer&nbsp;&nbsp;method (this may be FTP&nbsp;or an external hard drive, either&nbsp;your own or one provided by NGDC)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please transfer your data as a single zip file, not \u2018zip files within zip files\u2019 (such as tar.gz)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To use a different file sharing system, please <a href=\"mailto:ngdc@bgs.ac.uk\">contact NGDC<\/a> (ngdc@bgs.ac.uk) for advice. We will need to&nbsp;&nbsp;perform additional security checks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Embargo periods&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>NERC data policy allows the environmental data centres to agree embargo periods, to restrict access to data, to protect the research process and to allow researchers time to work up their&nbsp;datasets and publish their findings. In most cases, a reasonable embargo period is between 6 and 24 months from the end of data collection. Once the embargo period has expired, the data will be made freely available on our deposited data search for any user to download, unless there is a valid reason to restrict access under the Environmental Information Regulations (EIRs).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Providing associated metadata&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All deposits must be accompanied by sufficient metadata through the <a href=\"http:\/\/transfer.bgs.ac.uk\/ingestion\">NGDC Data Deposit Application<\/a>. Third party and physical materials require a metadata entry, even when no data is deposited with NGDC. For full guidance on creating useful and robust metadata, visit our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/metadata\">metadata guidance<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Non-compliance with NERC data policy&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a presumption that it is in the public interest to release publicly funded data unless there is a valid reason for it being withheld. What is the difference between an ODMP and a DMP?  <\/span><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acc-body sea-background-e\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Your grant application contained a one-page ODMP in which you were asked to identify datasets likely to be made available to NERC environmental data centres for archiving and re-use at the end of the grant. ODMPs (and cases for support) for successful proposals are made available to the data centres, which use them to draft <\/span>a full data management plan (DMP), in collaboration with the principal investigator. NERC data centres will work with you to create a more extensive, full DMP that captures any additional information they need to archive your data and make it available in the long term.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A lead data centre will be identified f<\/span>or research programmes, which will be the primary point of contact for data management issues within the programme.
