It is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/who-we-are\/nerc\/our-policies-and-standards\/nerc-data-policy\/#:~:text=Central%20to%20the%20policy%20is%20that%20NERC-funded%20scientists,available%20for%20anybody%20to%20use%20without%20any%20restrictions.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NERC data policy<\/a>&nbsp;and<strong>\u202f<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/download\/ngdc-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NGDC policy<\/a><strong>\u202f<\/strong>to preserve this data, which underpins the existing scientific record, and make it accessible to a wide range of end users for future re-use in order to fully realise its re-use potential.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our skills and experience reflect the diverse nature of geoscience. Using the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41597-020-0486-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TRUST principles<\/a> for digital repositories, we strive to ensure the data we manage is findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable (&#8216;FAIR&#8217;). We also provide guidance and best practice to our users throughout the data management life cycle, from data planning, through support with metadata creation, to developing tools for data discovery and access.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NGDC is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/core-trust-seal-ngdc-accreditation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">certified as a\u202ftrusted repository<\/a>\u202fby&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coretrustseal.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CoreTrustSeal<\/a>. We accept geoscience data in re-usable formats. Priority is given to data generated as a result of activities that are either funded by NERC or to fulfil with drilling statutory obligations. However, other deposited data that supports NGDC&#8217;s remit will be considered at our discretion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Environmental Data Service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The NGDC is one of a network of five data centres that make up the&nbsp;NERC EDS, each providing domain-specific expertise. The NGDC Grants team supports and provides guidance to NERC-funded grant holders within the geoscience discipline during their grant-funded project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/ngdc\/nerc-grant-funded-researchers\">specific guidance for NERC-funded researchers<\/a> on our website.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">National Borehole Index<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the NGDC, BGS is also responsible for the management of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/information-hub\/borehole-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK National Borehole Index<\/a>, made up of borehole records deposited (and accepted) with BGS either voluntarily or to fulfil legislative requirements. Through NERC, NGDC\/BGS is named in UK legislation as the place of deposit for borehole records relating to water wells, mineral exploration and&nbsp;hydrocarbon data. NGDC\/BGS <strong>must <\/strong>be notified of an individual&#8217;s intention to drill a borehole&nbsp;through the <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.bgs.ac.uk\/services\/NGDC\/records\/notification\/form.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NGDC&#8217;s notification portal<\/a>&nbsp;prior to the class=\"wp-block-heading\">National Geological Repository<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our physical geological materials collections are managed through the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geological-data\/national-geological-repository\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Geological Repository<\/a> (NGR), which is a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.infraportal.org.uk\/node\/2001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK Research and Innovation<\/a> (UKRI) national science facility and host to the largest collection
