Some 176.3 million tonnes of minerals were extracted from the UK landmass for sale in 2023. This publication forms part of Britain&#8217;s continuous mining and quarrying record.<\/p>\n\n\n        <div class=\"js-anchor-link-wrap anchor-link-wrap\" id=\"opencast\"><span class=\"sr-only js-anchor-link\">UK opencast coal statistics<\/span><\/div>\n        \n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"UKMY\">United Kingdom opencast coal statistics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>BGS collated comprehensive, annual&nbsp;statistics on opencast coal&nbsp;for the whole of the UK until 2015, in collaboration with the Coal Authority and planning authorities. This continued a series published in the past by the Planning Officers\u2019 Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/mineralsuk\/minerals\/mine-and-quarry\/coal\/\">Additional information on coal<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mineral extraction in Great Britain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Office of National Statistics published an annual report on\u00a0mineral extraction in Great Britain\u00a0that was based on the Annual Minerals Raised Inquiry. The last survey published was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/mineral-extraction-in-great-britain-2014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mineral extraction in Great Britain 2014<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2023 Aggregate Minerals Survey for Great Britain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The aggregate minerals surveys, provide in-depth and up-to-date information on regional and national sales, inter-regional flows, transportation, consumption and permitted reserves of primary aggregates. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/aggregate-minerals-survey-for-great-britain-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Collation of the Results of the 2023 Aggregates Minerals Survey\u00a0<\/a>report is currently available.<\/p>\n\n\n        <div class=\"js-anchor-link-wrap anchor-link-wrap\" id=\"ownership\"><span class=\"sr-only js-anchor-link\">Ownership of minerals in the UK<\/span><\/div>\n        \n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ownership of minerals in the UK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the exception of energy minerals (oil, gas and coal) and precious metals (gold and silver), minerals are mostly in private ownership in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). Northern Ireland has a different minerals ownership regime: metallic and industrial minerals are in state ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On private land in Great Britain, the ownership of mineral rights often lies with the surface owner. However, it is not uncommon for the rights to the surface and the minerals to be separated.
