The collection underpins our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/mineralsuk\/minerals\/building-stones\/building-stone-services\/\">stone matching service<\/a>&nbsp;and much of the work we do. The collection continues to grow on a daily basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent additions include the&nbsp;<em>National Roofing Slate Collection<\/em>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<em>British Building Stone Collection<\/em>&nbsp;(previously held in London).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GeoScenic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Archive of Geological Photographs is accessible to the public through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/information-hub\/photos-and-images\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GeoScenic<\/a>. Photographs of stone-built structures, quarries, building stone samples and thin sections are available for the public to view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Databases<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>BGS currently maintains a number of databases containing building stone information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/mineralsuk\/minerals\/mine-and-quarry\/directory-of-mines-and-quarries\/\">mines and quarries database<\/a>&nbsp;(&#8216;BritPits&#8217;) contains information on thousands of historical and active building stone quarries in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/technologies\/databases\/bgs-rock-collections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BritRocks database<\/a>&nbsp;contains information on over 26&nbsp;000 building stone samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/mineralsuk\/minerals\/building-stones\/building-stones-database-for-england\/\">Building Stones Database for England<\/a>&nbsp;is a repository of data on building stone resources and the stone built heritage of England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/mineralsuk\/minerals\/building-stones\/building-stone-database-for-scotland\/\">Building Stones Database of Scotland<\/a>&nbsp;is an integrated, open-access resource on building stones, quarries, samples and stone-built sites. It aims to define and describe all of the building stones of Scotland and provide details of associated quarries, built sites and samples for each one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Facilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>BGS&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geological-research\/science-facilities\/rock-volume-cluster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rock volume characterisation lab<\/a>&nbsp;provide a comprehensive range of geotechnical tests in support of building stone activities, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>dry, saturated and particle density<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>effective porosity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>saturation coefficient<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>water absorption<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>compressive and flexural strength<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<section
