Lithological Description: Pelites, dark-grey, graphitic in parts, commonly andalusite-bearing, phyllitic to slaty. Bands of metabasalt and ultramafic rock, particularly in lower part.
Definition of Lower Boundary: Top of thick persistent unit of greywacke grit at the top of interbedded grits and metavolcanic rocks characteristic of the lower part of the Blackwater Formation.
Definition of Upper Boundary: Base of overlying thick quartzite (the Grumack Hill Quartzite Member).
Thickness: 900m (based on outcrop width of 1km, with no allowance for probable folding).
Geographical Limits: SE flank of River Deveron Valley between Hill of Bank [NJ 3829] and Succoth [NJ 43 35] Cabrach area, Moray District, 1:50 000 sheets 75E (just), 85E and 86W.
