Age range: Pusgillian Stage (OP) — Pusgillian Stage (OP)
Lithological Description: Grey flaggy greywacke sandstone and siltstone flysch.
Definition of Lower Boundary: Rests on the Myoch Formation in Penwhapple Burn. The base of the Confusion Member (= base of Shalloch Formation) is there marked by the upward change from red and green mudstone to sandstone/siltstone flysch.
Definition of Upper Boundary: Succeeded by a 1.1m leaden-grey mudstone bed that marks the base of the Shalloch Formation at the coast, where this mudstone rests directly on the Mill Formation. The Confusion Member is therefore the lateral equivalent of the Mill Formation at the coast, but of different (Shalloch type) facies.
