The highly productive Chalk and Permo\u2013Triassic sandstones are the major sources of groundwater for public supply.&nbsp;Water companies in south-east England, where groundwater contributes over 75&nbsp;per cent of total public water supply, are heavily reliant on the Chalk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"regional\">Regional groundwater studies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We prepared a series of&nbsp;hydrogeological reviews of regional aquifers, including the Chalk aquifers of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/nora.nerc.ac.uk\/5800\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North Downs<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/nora.nerc.ac.uk\/12713\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Downs<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/nora.nerc.ac.uk\/3700\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yorkshire<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/nora.nerc.ac.uk\/3699\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lincolnshire<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/nora.nerc.ac.uk\/id\/eprint\/522484\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wessex<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BGS has also produced a <a href=\"https:\/\/earthwise.bgs.ac.uk\/index.php\/Hydrogeology_of_Wales:_Introduction_-_geology_and_groundwater\">summary of the hydrogeology of Wales.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Future changes in public water supply<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Water companies are planning to reduce abstraction from some public supply water sources (surface water and groundwater) where it affects the environment. These reductions, known as &#8216;sustainability reductions&#8217;, are intended to alleviate low river flows or water levels in wetland areas, usually in order to protect habitats.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Figure 4 shows planned sustainability reductions (both groundwater and surface water) as a percentage of total deployable output in 2019.&nbsp;Three companies planned to reduce existing abstractions by between 5 and 10 per cent (Severn Trent Water, South East Water and Cambridge Water).<\/p>\n\n\n<figure  class=\"img-wrap\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/groundwater\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/04\/Sustainability_reductions-scaled-1-699x1024.jpg\" data-toggle=\"lightbox\" data-footer=\"&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Figure 4&lt;\/strong&gt;\u00a0 Sustainability reductions by 2045 in England and Wales. BGS \u00a9 UKRI.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"expand-box expand-box-top\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/groundwater\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/04\/Combined_reductions-scaled-1-699x1024.jpg\" ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/groundwater\/wp-content\/themes\/bgs\/img\/expand.svg\" alt=\"Expand icon\"><\/a><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can download all these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/download\/groundwater-resources-of-the-uk-images-for-download\/\">groundwater resources of the UK maps<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recent developments in water resources planning in England and Wales<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The analysis presented here is based on the latest water resources management plans, published in 2019.&nbsp;Water resources planning in England and Wales is currently in a period of significant change.&nbsp;Following work by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.water.org.uk\/publication\/water-resources-long-term-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Water UK<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;National Infrastructure Commission (now the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/national-infrastructure-and-service-transformation-authority\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority<\/a>), the Environment Agency published their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/meeting-our-future-water-needs-a-national-framework-for-water-resources\/meeting-our-future-water-needs-a-national-framework-for-water-resources-accessible-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Framework for Water Resources<\/a> in 2020. This marks a move from company level planning to planning at the regional scale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Karst aquifers in England<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>BGS work on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/groundwater\/water-resources\/groundwater-resources-in-the-uk\/karst-aquifers\/\">karst aquifers<\/a> focused on the Chalk and Jurassic and Permian limestones of England, soluble carbonate aquifers in which caves are uncommon and karst was generally not well recognised.
