The source of the water is a stone carved into the shape of a crocodile head and the water is coming out of its mouth.\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/groundwater\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/10\/P775228-banner.jpg\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-bgs-blocks-content-container content-section\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12\">\n<p>BGS measures,&nbsp;monitors&nbsp;and&nbsp;maps&nbsp;groundwater to advance knowledge and enable groundwater to be sustainably developed and managed in the UK and globally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Half of the world\u2019s population&nbsp;rely&nbsp;on groundwater for drinking and much of international food production is irrigated with groundwater.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the UK, groundwater provides a third of public water supply in the UK, mostly&nbsp;in the south-east of England where rainfall is low and demand is high. Groundwater is increasingly under threat from&nbsp;over-use, climate&nbsp;change&nbsp;and pollution.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BGS acts as the national repository for groundwater data, holding extensive collections of hydrogeological information \u2014 including well records, groundwater levels, water quality data, aquifer&nbsp;properties&nbsp;and hydrogeological maps \u2014 and uses these data to develop knowledge,&nbsp;tools&nbsp;and models to help develop and manage groundwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t\t\t<div  class=\"owl-carousel carousel-primary-color carousel owl-theme thumbs-carousel-js\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"item\"><figure  class=\"img-wrap\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/groundwater\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/07\/P512666.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"Water spurts out of a vertical metal tube.\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption sm-line\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"caption-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/groundwater\/wp-content\/themes\/bgs\/img\/info-caption.svg\" alt=\"Information icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"caption-text\"><p>Artesian groundwater well in Arran, Scotland. BGS \u00a9 UKRI.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Groundwater level forecasting <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The BGS produces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/geology-projects\/environmental-modelling\/groundwater-level-forecasting\/\">forecasts of groundwater levels<\/a> for 48 different locations across the UK\u2019s principal aquifers, the results from which are incorporated in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hydoutuk.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hydrological Outlook UK website<\/a>&nbsp;on a monthly basis. The sites are currently mainly located on the major aquifers of England, with a lower density of sites in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The models are driven using seasonal weather forecasts produced by the UK Met Office. BGS produce the Hydrological Outlook in partnership with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceh.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/environment-agency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Environment Agency<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK Met Office<\/a><a style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sepa.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scottish Environment Protection Agency<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalresourceswales.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Natural Resources Wales<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.infrastructure-ni.gov.uk\/topics\/rivers-and-flooding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department for Infrastructure<\/a>, Northern Ireland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Groundwater resources in the UK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/groundwater\/water-resources\/groundwater-resources-in-the-uk\/\">Groundwater is a vital resource across the UK<\/a>, supporting public and private water supply, agriculture, industry and the environment. \u00a0BGS provides a wide range of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/groundwater\/data\/\">groundwater datasets and information products<\/a>\u00a0, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/datasets\/hydrogeology-625k\/\">1:625\u202f000 Hydrogeology Map of the UK<\/a>.
