Colleagues from the British Geological Survey, Universities of Leicester and Nottingham, the Natural History Museum and industry professionals will be running a fieldwork training course at the offices of the BGS and on the island of Milos, Greece, from the 15-26th May 2023. The course is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (UKRI) and is open to UK-based doctoral and early career researchers.

- Who should attend – The course is designed for UK-based doctoral students and early career researchers. It is relevant to researchers who wish to learn more about modern geoscience surveying techniques from planning a survey to its execution to geological model production with an emphasis on mineral exploration. It will also be appropriate for researchers interested in the formation of mineral deposits and the applied earth science aspects of volcanology and magmatic processes.
- Location – BGS Offices, Keyworth, Nottingham and Milos island, Greece.
- Selection and Priority – Applications will be anonymised and selection will be based on training need. If the course is over-subscribed preference will be given to PhD students in receipt of UKRI/NERC funding and early career researchers (any funding stream). Research areas should be in the environmental sciences.
- Course fees – If you are allocated a place, the course is free (subject to maximum allowances). This includes all course materials, accommodation, and transport to the field areas on Milos island, Greece. You will need to make your own arrangements for travel to BGS offices at the beginning of the course and from Heathrow airport at the end.
- Equipment – You will be expected to provide your own basic field clothing and equipment (e.g. walking boots, waterproofs, geological hammer, hand-lens). But where appropriate BGS will provide specialist PPE (e.g. steel toe-capped boots/wellingtons, safety glasses) and field-sampling equipment (e.g. auger, pan, sieves).
- Widening participation – We are keen that the training should be accessible as possible. We will look to make adjustments for successful applicants that are disabled and there are additional bursaries available for people that may have caring responsibilities or need to purchase specialist equipment to enable them take part in the training.
- Results of application – We hope to make the first offer of places on 24th February 2023
