Dixey was born in Wales on 7 April 1892. He graduated with a first-class honours degree in geology from the University College, Cardiff in 1914 and shortly afterwards joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, serving on the Western Front from 1915–1918. He was appointed Government Geologist to Sierra Leone in 1918, Director of the Geological Survey of Nyasaland in 1921, Director of Water Development in Northern Rhodesia in 1939, Director of the Geological Survey of Nigeria in 1944 and Director of the Colonial Overseas Geological Surveys in 1947. He retired in 1959 but continued to do consultancy work. He was knighted in 1972 and died on 1 November 1982. |
