Treasures from the Archives

The BGS Archives contain many interesting and historical items that have been collected over many decades.

These include shrapnel from a bomb that hit the Geological Museum in 1940, a set of handmade puppets from the 1950s and an Imperial Service Medal awarded to the Geological Museum housekeeper and stores clerk.

The labours of Hercules

The statue of Hercules at the BGS Headquarters in Nottingham was carved out of Portland Stone in 1850 and caused controversy in the 1880s because of his nakedness.
