Web services development

iGeology

We have extensive experience in developing open-standard web services. By making our data available as web services, they can be utilised by third parties when building data-access systems of their own.

We have direct links to relevant standards bodies such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the Open Geospatial Consiortium (OGC) and are heavily involved in the writing of standards and web service technical guidelines at national, European and global levels. Find out more about our work on data sharing collaboration projects across Europe [link to working in Europe page] and our work enabling the EU INSPIRE Directive and the UK Location Programme.

The BGS is a member of the ESSP partnership. By combining our data, information and expertise, we can help with the design and delivery of products and services for society, private enterprise and government.

In collaboration with EDINA, the BGS has developed and advises the Scottish Government on its One Scotland — One Geography Scottish Spatial Data Infrastructure project.
