The BGS Records Room.

A researcher making use of a small selection of the records

Many of our records are scanned in-house and stored digitally on secure servers

Records are protected using a halon/aragonite fire suppression system.

Our valuable and extensive map collection is held in a strongroom, with a stand-alone fire suppression system including fireproof doors and walls.

Our registration team add over 50 000 new borehole records to the online index each year.

Reports: examples of some of the 20 000 reports that have been produced by the BGS on various aspects of geology in the UK and abroad.

Offshore data: BGS has carried out extensive surveys of the continental shelf and these show records of the sea bed

Site investigation reports: some 50 000 have been desposited with BGS by external organisations.

Borehole records: an example of one of the 1.2 million records we hold.

Notebooks: sketch of the dolomitic conglomerate quarry in the Portishead area. One of a number of detailed sketches by A H Green c. 1860.

Journals: examples of shaft and bore journals from a colliery c. 1870; deposited with BGS by the Coal Authority.

Mine plans: the BGS has over 40 000 mine plans databased; the collection includes original plans from 1835 onwards.

Our records are accessible by the public, academia and the commercial sector, with visitors regularly making use of the information available within our varied collections.
