The sustainability of the world's water resources is under ever-increasing pressure from man's impact, including effects of pollution, over-exploitation and climate change. BGS conducts research on the physical properties of aquifers which are used as supplies for agricultural, industrial and domestic use, as well as for drinking water. Investigations have included characterisation of the physical properties of aquifers across the UK, transport of immiscible phases in the UK Permo-Triassic sandstone, the role of fracturing in contaminant transport and influences of diagenesis on aquifer hydrogeology. The research is carried out in our in-house physical-properties laboratory.
