The BGS’s marine operations a purpose built engineering facility located at Loanhead on the outskirts of Edinburgh. This facility is at the full disposal of the science community.

Since 1985, the BGS has undertaken marine geophysics surveys, seabed sampling, coring and drilling operations for BGS science, UK and international science and other commissioned research and commercial projects, both in UK and worldwide. The wide range of geophysical surveying and coring equipment available permits a flexible approach to survey requirements. There is a sharp focus on operational requirements in order for the demands of BGS and other international science to be met. Research and development on equipment is also undertaken.
