| A magnetometer is a sensor that is used to detect
local variations in the Earth's magnetic field or metallic objects
For marine survey the magnetometer is contained in a waterproof housing,
which is towed at a distance behind the survey vessel (to avoid the
vessel being detected).
Depending on the resolution of the system and the water depth the data can be used to produce a magnetic field map or locate features on the sea bed this can be invaluable for site surveys in areas where sub-sea cable or pipeline have been laid. Marine operations have recently purchased a Marine Magnetics SeaSPY, high resolution Overhauser type magnetometer with both a 60 metre and 300 metre tow cable. This will enable us to provide high resolution inshore surveys and offshore surveys. |
