The aim of this project is to model the ground conditions and natural hazards within this urban setting by integrating modern surface geological mapping and other geo-environmental information with subsurface borehole data.
The results are displayed in an attributed 3D geoscientific model, which can be interrogated interactively or sub-sampled to provide thematic GIS layers.
The Lower Mersey Corridor, extending from Manchester to Liverpool, is a rapidly developing, predominantly urbanised, area with a long history of intense, largely unrestrained industrialisation. It includes the urban areas of Salford, Warrington, Runcorn and Widnes.
The area's industrial history was founded on coal mining, locomotive engineering and the textile industry (including the bleaching and dyeing of cotton).
These activities have left a legacy of contaminated land and groundwater pollution in what is one of the most densely populated areas of the UK. It is now an area undergoing major regeneration including major redevelopment and economic generation projects such as MediaCityUK, Mersey Gateway and Peel Waters.
