Lower Mersey Corridor geological modelling

The Lower Mersey Corridor 3D geological model was built using a variety of datasets. Information from 4390 boreholes was interpreted and coded to provide the subsurface thicknesses and distribution of units.

BGS 1:50 000 superficial map polygons were incorporated to constrain the extent of the geological units according to their surface distribution, and the model also includes detailed artificial ground characterisation.

Cross sections

The 399 cross-sections, created by linking borehole positions, form a grid across the model. The geological units are correlated along these sections, allowing a 3D subsurface model to be created, with greater model detail around urban areas. The geological units have also been attributed with engineering geology data for the Liverpool area of the model.
