The BGS National Landslide Database is being developed as the definitive source of information on landslides in Britain.

Although the database is not yet complete, it currently holds over 14 000 records. Every year, we add up to 2000 records as new landslides are logged and ancient, degraded landslides are identified.

Information comes from a variety of sources. Most is derived from published BGS geological maps and renewed surveys. Other sources include commissioned and research studies, including the Department of the Environment (DoE) National Landslide Database compiled in the 1990s, and a number of regional databases compiled by the BGS since the 1970s.

The information is held in digital format that can be adapted and updated so that it will be useable for decades to come.

Each landslide is documented as fully as possible with information on:

  • Location
  • Name
  • Size and dimensions
  • Landslide Type
  • Trigger
  • Damage caused
  • Slope Aspect
  • Material
  • Movement date
  • Vegetation, water on landslide
  • Age and development of landslide
