Hi-RES - What do the magnetic data show?

Magnetic data - revealing concealed geology
Magnetic data - revealing concealed geology

Magnetic data provide information on:

  • concealed geological structure (shallow and deep) especially in volcanic and metamorphic terrains
  • structure in ‘non-magnetic’ sedimentary terrains (with modern high resolution surveys)
  • structural controls on mineral deposition (indicating targets for follow-up exploration) and groundwater movement
  • unrecorded landfill sites containing metal waste.

Ayrshire: These images demonstrate that modern high-resolution data (200 m line spacing; left) provides much greater definition of concealed structure than our existing data (2 km line spacing; right) collected in the 1950s and 1960s. The structures include sills and dykes that may host mineralisation, represent a hard rock aggregate resource, or act as barriers/pathways for groundwater movement.
